Forest

The wealth of a nation can be determined on seeing the area of the forest coverage. If there is a green forest, the inter dependant species, i.e. animals also will flourish. So, increasing the forest area and maintaining the present forest land will help the country to prosper and to march forward to the path of developed countries. FOREST are the assets of the nation. The growth of the forest mainly depends upon the rain and also where it is situated. In the areas like the gangetic delta has got thick forests. In the hilly terrain, cony- leaf trees forest are there. Thus the forest maintains ecological balance of the country.

Land that has a dense cover of trees and shrubs is called a forest. The forests requires abundant sunlight, temperature and rainfall. Taking in to consideration the types of trees and climatic conditions of the area, the forests are classified as:

• Tropical evergreen forest – where the rainfall is more than 300 cms.
• Semi evergreen forest – where the rainfall is (up to 200 cms.)
• Tropical deciduous forest – where the rainfall is between 100 to 200 cms.
• Thorn forest – where the rainfall is less than 80 cm.
• Tidal forest along the rivers
• Mangroove forest on the Sundarban forest in ganga delta.

Forests In India

In 2008, India had 20.6% of its total area under forest cover as per the Forest Survey of India. Out of this 1.6% with dense forests, 10.2% moderately dense forests, 8.82% with bush land. The maximum area under forest cover is Madhya Pradesh is 11% of India’s forest cover. Next comes Arunachal Pradesh, which has 10%, Chattisgarh has 8.25%, Orissa 7.15%, Maharashtra 7.01%.
In India there are 67 National Parks, 394 Wild life Sancturies, 17 Tiger Reserves are there.

In India, forest area has been decreasing as a result of land cleared for farming, flooding for irrigation and hydroelectric projects, expansion of urban areas, for industries, for laying roads, power lines etc.

Realising the importance of the forest and the need to maintain these forests and increase the forest area, the government has declared many of them as reserved or protected forests. These forests are owned by the Government and the Government reserves the right to allow people to enter these forests and use its products.

In 1955, the Sariska National Park was declared a reserved forest. This became a Wild Life Sanctuary in 1958. This got the status of Tiger Reserve in 1978. Finally it was made as a National Park in 1992. Government was not only funding but also protection was given at a large extent.

Awareness programmes like tree planting, sunlight encouragements etc. should be given to the public especially to the students.

The Uses Of Forests

From olden days the trees are regarded as god. In some parts of the world, even today trees are worshiped as god.

It is a home for many animals and birds to live. Even man depends on forests for some reason or the other, whether directly or indirectly. Many Siddha, Ayurvedic and other medicinal plants are obtained from the plants in the forests.

The forests clear the carbon-di-oxides of the area. So it becomes the responsibility of every citizen to look after and protect the animals planting new trees and also guard against the forest fire.

Woods are used in construction for doors and windows and scaffoldings during constructions etc.

Forests are playing a vital role in global warming.

The life cycle of inter-dependency makes it necessity to increase the number of trees and the forest areas.

Some evergreens can mature at 50 years and some may live to be thousands of years old. The oldest known conifers are the bristlecone pines that grow in the southwestern United States. Some of the trees are even as old as 4,000 years. The trees of these forests could be used for making furniture, houses etc.

Conservation Of Forests

The dense forests will contain cash crops such as : Sandal wood, Teak Wood, Rose Wood, Rubber Trees etc. Considering the richness of the forest and the advantages of having such forests, every nation must protect the forests and increasing the forest area and must create lot of National Parks and Wild Life Sanctuaries to safeguard the endangered species.

The animals that like in forests are elephants, lions, tigers, deer, rhinos, zebra, monkey, bison etc.

The main difference between the reserved forests and protected forests is that in reserved forests is that in reserved forests rights to all activities like hunting and grazing are banned, unless specific orders are issued by the government and in protected forests rights to all activities like hunting and grazing are allowed unless specific orders are issued. Thus reserved forests enjoy greater protection than protected forests.

THE NEW HUNTING FOREST This was a recent forest founded by the CONQUERER, WILLIAM, who was initially having a farm for pig, donkey, ponies and cattle breeding. Now this has been spread to huge area.
